History Workshop Online (HWO) is seeking to commission articles that relate to histories of Africa and the African diaspora.
As an online magazine that continues the spirit of the History Workshop movement, HWO promotes radical history in a digital age. We publish short, accessible and engaging articles that reflect on contemporary issues shaping our world, agitating for change, and deepening public understandings of the past.
In 2022, we hope to publish a range of articles that showcase cutting-edge and original research into histories of Africa and the African diaspora. We seek contributions on all regions, periods, and themes, including articles that discuss pre-1800 histories and / or use innovative methodologies. Articles might be informed by contemporary issues; hinge on historical events, objects or ideas; or reflect on diasporic and transnational movements from, to and within Africa throughout history.
We recognise that histories centring on Africa and the African diaspora have often been placed second to stories of European interaction and intervention in the continent, told through the lens of Western colonialism. This open call for submissions serves as an attempt to showcase the important scholarship that has been – and is being – done on the rich and diverse histories of Africa and the African diaspora.
We particularly encourage contributions that are radical, political, contentious and accessible. HWO connects radical history to social, political, and cultural issues and problems in the present day. It provides a space where historians and the public can passionately, professionally, and personally engage with the histories that shape our understanding of the past and the present.
While this is an open call and ongoing commissioning priority, the deadline for our first round of submissions is Friday 11th February 2022.
Please send all ideas, proposals or submissions to HWO Editors: firstname.lastname@example.org
