Aquinas College, Stockport is offering a 10 week course, beginning on 16 September, on radical political ideas and movements in Greater Manchester, including Stockport. This area was at the centre of the social, economic and industrial upheavals of the Industrial Revolution. These gave birth to a series of radical working class movements and events including Peterloo (at which there was a contingent from Stockport), the Luddites, Chartism, Socialism and trade unionism.
The course will look at the history of these movements and also include three walks in Manchester city centre which will explore sites connected with Peterloo, Karl Marx and Frederick and the radical movements discussed in the course. The course is being tutored by Michael Herbert, MA, who has been researching and writing about radical history for many years. His most recent book is Up Then Brave Women: Manchester Radical Women, 1819-1918. His regularly leads history walks and recently did some filming for the BCC programme the Culture Show with Maxine Peake and Miranda Sawyer.
