History Workshop Journal and the Raphael Samuel Centre invite you to celebrate Alun Howkins’ life and work. The evening will include a screening from BBC television’s The Fruitful Earth (Dir/prod Judith Winnan, 1999) – an exploration of agriculture and the struggle to feed mankind – introduced by Alun. Speakers and singers will include Vic Gammon, Ben Jones, Claire Langhamer and Lucy Robinson, Nicola Verdon, Kate Hodgkin, and Sally Alexander.

Alun Howkins

Alun Howkins (1947 – 2018) was an English social historian, specialising in the history of English rural society. Regarded as a leading historian of the English countryside and its working class, Howkins was a professor of history at the University of Sussex and co-founder of the journal Rural History.
