History Workshop Journal 73

Issue 73 of History Workshop Journal is now available
in print and online.

The issue’s table of contents appears below.

Highlights of the issue include Nick Hopwood’s consideration of an unusual sculptural bust of anatomist Wilhelm His, which depicts the embryologist in marble, holding an image of an embryo, also in marble, available free to all via open access. A feature on Race, Bodies, and Beauty includes articles by Christopher Forth on fatness and race in French and British colonial discourse, by Yasmin Khan on race and sexual intimacy in India during World War Two, and by Lynn Thomas on skin lighteners in South Africa.

Celia Hughes examines young men’s radicalism in the 1960s; Melanie Tebbutts explores family memory and collected objects; Barry Reay and Erin Griffey rediscover the uncloseted homoerotic art of Edward Melcarth; Lucy Bland discusses the Russell divorce scandal of the 1920s; and Hilary Sapire discusses responses to royal trips to India and South Africa in the same decade.

Several articles include additional material available online. Readers of Lynn Abram’s discussion of the ‘Story of the Bottle of Medicine’–a story told by Shetland storyteller Mary Manson in 1982–can listen to the recording of the interview with Manson. Diana Jeater’s consideration of the life and work of Terence Ranger is based on Jeater’s interview with Ranger, the transcript of which was originally published on HWO.

The issue’s ‘back half’ features reviews of books by Sara Dubow, John Heilbron, David Wootton, James Mark, James Hinton, Jonathan Marwil, Sarah Apetrei, and Suchetana Chattopadhyay. Also included are Sarmila Bose’s reflections on writing Dead Reckoning , her book on the 1971 Bangladesh war, and a report on the impact of government’s cuts on museums.
